Music School Options

Filed under Health and Fitness | Posted by guest author

Music schools around the country and indeed around the world, offer a wide selection of degree courses and certifications. Students may choose to study a specific instrument or a broader subject like composition, music theory or recording music.

In an industry that concentrates on classical music, being a master of your instrument can be very advantageous therefore it is relevant that you take up a course that enables you to hone your skills. Jazz musicians may also gain from taking a more instructional approach to mastering their instruments. Nonetheless, for other kinds of artists like those who play rock, pop, and hip-hop, an academic degree may be both advantageous and disadvantageous.

Obviously all artists need to be comfortable on their instrument and to be able to make it do what they would like it to do. However an overly academic mastery of an instrument can clean over the rough edges, which define many rock, pop and hip-hop artists. Imagine for instance if Bob Dylan had signed up for voice lessons or if the Clash had studied classical guitar.

Going to music school for recording music on the other hand can offer many advantages for all different manners of musicians. Understanding how to record, produce and mix music can make it feasible for you to produce your own music as well as that of others. Mastering music production may also qualify you for a profession as a record producer or an audio engineer.

If you are one of those individuals who enjoys being engaged with music of a day-to-day basis then a profession as a producer or engineer is perfect for you. Often times producers function as champions especially to the listeners. They make sure that the song that is currently being recorded and produced will be valued by the people.

Some other producers are creative artists in themselves. These people integrate artists and musicians in order to create music that is based on what they imagine, much the same with the “wall of sound” made famous by Phil Spector. Sir George Martin who worked with the Beatles brought a whole new sound to the group’s tunes. Many high-profile producers like Sir George, Phil Spector and Puff Daddy, become famous, or infamous themselves.

Audio engineers on the other hand are not as renowned as producers. However the audio engineers job is of equal significance. Engineers do all of the hands-on work that is involved in a recording session. The engineer lays cable and adjusts the angles of microphones so the producer can get the sound he wants out of a singer. Most audio engineers are officially qualified to produce and in fact many often do act as producers.

If you are interested in possibly working as a producer or engineer then going to music school for recording may be a great idea. However, before you make the final decision take time to think about the other options like the mentor-apprenticeship course being offered by Recording Connection.
