Does your family have history of having diabetes?  Has anybody in your family been tested positive for high blood sugar levels?  If you answer yes to either one of these questions, chances are you are likely to get diabetes earlier or later if you don’t watch what you eat.

One of the most widespread diseases in this day and age is diabetes which affects millions of people around the world.  Having diabetes would not really kill a person who has it but its effects can little by little damage a person’s general well being as he age.  In addition to complications and dangers brought about by diabetes, the most dreaded part of having it is that there is no cure.

If this disease is not dealt with appropriately, it could lead to vision loss or cutting the person’s leg off.  Severe cases like these can take place if a person with diabetes gets a wound in his feet or legs, particularly for someone over 60.  Apart from failure of eyesight or amputation, diabetes can also bring about other complications to other vital organs like the heart and kidneys.

The reason behind diabetes’ destructiveness to one’s physical condition is because it disrupts good circulation of the blood.  The primary culprit in diabetes is glucose as the body is unable to process it as it should be, thus, accumulating in the blood.  A diabetic’s body also either does not generate an adequate amount insulin or does not respond well to its own insulin.  Comparable to fatty buildup in the bloodstream, glucose buildup can show the way to various minor and major health problems.

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are the two most common forms of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is known as “juvenile diabetes” as it affects more numbers of children than any other kind of diabetes.  In type 1 diabetes, there is a lack of insulin which will eventually cause problems.

Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is the abnormal reaction of the body to insulin which is known as insulin resistance.  In this condition, different cells in the body like muscle, liver, and fat cells do not normally accept insulin to convert sugar into energy ensuing to high blood sugar levels.  This is the form of diabetes that afflicts more individuals worldwide and it is also attributed to obesity.

Some of the signs and symptoms of diabetes are increased thirst, upsurged fluid intake, weight loss, mental fatigue and frequent urination.  These symptoms can advance rapidly in Type 1 diabetes or slowly and subtly in Type 2 diabetes.  When it comes to weight loss, however, occurs mainly to individuals with type 1 diabetes and also becomes a rare occurrence among people with type 2.

Treatments for diabetes involve insulin injections, proper diet and exercise, and blood sugar levels should be continuously monitored by means of a glucose meter.  People who are at high risk of developing diabetes are overweight to obese, intaking sugary foods and living inactive lifestyles.

The best cure is prevention.  Not allowing diabetes to develop to start with is the best course of action you can take.  Consuming healthy food and lowering sugar intake will help a lot and exercising frequently would drive down the risk of having diabetes even more.
